Fighting Climate Change: 20% Energy Use Reduction Right Now
How we waste energy at home...

There are many ways in which energy is wasted at home in our daily life. One of them is the unnecessary lighting, both indoors and outdoors. A practice that stands out is that porch lights are left on all night. Recently we conducted a surve in early morning. What we found is that about 70% of all households in our survey community have some lights on over-night. Here we show some examples. However, no blames are attched to anyone here since this is only a demonstration of a wide-spread practice. Our goal is to bring attention to such energy waste and hope this will lead to concrete actions by all across the nation and across the world to reduce such waste.

House #1
This house has 2 front porch lights and 2 garage lights - averaging 240 Watts turned on for 10 extra hours at night. That's 2.4 kWh per day and 876 kWh per year. If turned of at night, it amounts to a saving of about $87.6 - which by the way reduces CO2 emission by about 1200 pounds (about 0.5 tons).
